1. How old do I have to be to register for programs at ESA?
• 18 years of age on the first day of class.


2. What do I need to work as an EMR in Alberta?
• Training and an EMR certificate from a school approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP)
• Pass the ACP examination for EMR. The ACP Provincial Exam Fee is $575.00; ACP Partial Rewrites are $300.00.
• Registration as an EMR with ACP. The ACP Initial Registration fee is $375.00. Registration must renewed annually.


3. Can I work in other Canadian provinces as an EMR with this certification and registration?
• Each province has different standards for EMR. You are advised to contact the provincial regulating body.


4. How long is the EMR Program at ESA?
• Part time – 7 weeks – weekends only


5. Do you offer an EMR Refresher program?
• Yes. EMR Refresher programs are offered in advance of each ACP exam in order to prepare for the exam.


6. Where can I work as an EMT if I pass the course at ESA?
• The EMT Program at ESA has 6 year accreditation with the Canadian Medical Association. As such, you would be able to work anywhere in Canada as long as you also have the appropriate registration.


7. How long is the EMT Program at ESA?
• 8 weeks of didactic including theory and lab/scenario training
• Practicums start the month after the didactic is complete.
• ESA arranges three practicum placements for each EMT student:
i. Hospital
ii. Interhospital transfer
iii. Ambulance
• Each practicum has minimum hours.
• The total length of the EMT program varies, as the ambulance practicums depend on call volume. In general, it takes 6 to 9 months to complete the EMT training.



8. Is Biology 30 a prerequisite for the EMT Program?
No, Biology 30 is not a prerequisite for the EMT Program at ESA.

Biology 30 or an equivalent (such as EMR taken at ESA, post secondary Anatomy and Physiology courses, or Science 30) is recommended and a definite advantage in EMT training. As well, such courses can be a factor in the candidate competition for placement in the EMT Program at ESA.



9. Where does ESA place ambulance practicums?
• Typical locations include Strathcona, St Albert, Parkland, Camrose, White Court, Bonnyville and the City of Edmonton.
• ESA looks for contracts with services offering availability, good call volume and a good practicum reputation.



10. How much are ACP fees for EMTs?
• The ACP Provincial Exam Fee is $675.00; ACP Partial Rewrites are $375.00.


11. How long is the Professional Fire Fighter Program at ESA?
• 12 weeks, Monday through Friday


12. Are there expiry dates on Fire Certificates?
• No


13. Where does the practical fire training take place?
• Each fire class spends 14 days at the fire training grounds of fire etc., Lakeland College, Vermilion AB.


14. Do I need to take EMR and EMT as part of the Fire Fighter training?
• At ESA, EMR and EMT are separate programs from the Professional Fire Fighter Program.


15. Are your programs eligible for Student Finance?
• EMR and EMT are eligible for various funding opportunities. Students should go to any Canada Employment Centre to pick up student loan forms, or to talk to a career counselor for funding options.
• The EMT Program at ESA is eligible for Canada Students loans. Applications may be made online at www.alis.gov.ab.ca.



16. Why are ESA programs expensive?
• ESA offers very intense and information filled programs, with curriculums enriched beyond the licensing requirements.
• ESA training is done by field practitioner instructors. ESA instructors are fire fighters, EMRs, EMTs, paramedics and registered nurses who have chosen emergency response as a career. They are up-to-date in their methods and teach from a wide range of experience.



17. What can I do to prepare for my interview and testing which are part of the EMT and Fire applications?
• Go into each competition as if you were going to a competition for a job.
• If you are applying for a Fire Program, search online for practice aptitude exams.
• Research the career you are pursuing, the employment opportunities, and ESA.
• Be early for your appointment.
• Be clean, well dressed and polite.


18. How do you accept payment of tuition?
• Canadian students can pay their tuition with Visa, MasterCard, Debit Card, cash, check, or money order.
• International students must use an international money order or bank draft to pay ESA fees.


19. When is tuition due?
• Application fees (nonrefundable) must be paid as part of your application
• Textbook deposits (also nonrefundable) are paid when you pick up your books in advance of the start date of the course.
• Any outstanding EMR tuition is due on the Friday preceding the first day of classes.
• Any outstanding EMT tuition is due on the first day of class.
• For the Professional Fire Fighter Program, a nonrefundable deposit of $1,500 must be paid upon acceptance to the program. Any outstanding fees must be paid by 4 PM on the Friday preceding the first day of classes.
• If you have applied for funding for any classes at ESA, written confirmation must be provided to ESA. In this situation, tuition is not due as listed above, but when the funding is received. If the funding is not given, the student is personally responsible for covering any outstanding fees.
• Final marks and transcripts are not released if there are any fees owing.



20. Can I pay my tuition all at once?
• Yes.


21. Is there any food for sale at ESA?
• ESA has a lunchroom with vending machines for coffee and hot drinks, candy and snacks, and cold drinks.
• There are several restaurants and fast food locations within walking distance.
