Description:
ESA offers a refresher course for individuals needing to upgrade and refresh their Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) skills.

Prerequisites:
An application for an EMR Refresher Course at ESA must include the following:

• Completed ESA Application Form including an Email address. Free email is available on Google (gmail) and Hotmail. Correspondence between ESA and students will be sent by email.
• Proof of age (minimum 18 years). A driver's license is acceptable.
• Students must provide a photocopy of a Certificate of Successful Completion for an EMR course from a program approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics. The certificate must include a graduation date stating that the program was completed within the preceding three years.
• Registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) as an EMR within the preceding three years is also acceptable.
• If you are an EMR but do not have a certificate or registration within the preceding three years, you can take an EMR Refresher Course at ESA for personal reasons (such as to improve your skills or gain additional practice). You will not receive an EMR Refresher Certificate upon completion of the course at ESA unless you comply with one of the above prerequisites.
• Full payment of course fees.

Program Schedule:
The EMR Refresher Course at ESA is a 16 hour course consisting of theory and practical scenarios.

The didactic portion of the course includes the following competencies:
• Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology
• Airway management
• Respiratory emergencies
• Cardiovascular and associated emergencies
• Chest trauma
• Abdominal trauma and emergencies
• Head injuries
• Seizures
• The unconscious patient
• Shock
• Burns
• Diabetic emergencies
• Obstetrics
• Pediatric emergencies
• Continuing competencies for the EMR

The course is presented in the EMS classroom and scenario practice areas at ESA.

Examinations:
The EMR Refresher student will be required to successfully complete a written examination. The grade required is 80% (eighty percent).

Credentials:
Successful students will receive a Certificate of Completion for the EMR Refresher Course from ESA.

The student must attend all 16 hours of instruction in order to receive the certificate and must successfully complete the examination.

Application:
It is the responsibility of an applicant to ensure an application submitted to ESA is complete and meets all prerequisites.

Acceptance will be confirmed upon receipt of a complete application and full payment of fees.

If an applicant withdraws from an EMR Refresher Course before the first day of classes, the Application Fee is non-refundable.

There is no refund available for the EMR Refresher Course at ESA after the course has commenced.

EMR Refresher Dates - 2012

• EMR Ref 1201: January 31, February 2, 7 & 9, 2012 (Tuesdays & Thursdays) from 1700 hrs. Rewrites on Saturday, February 13, 2012 at 1300 hrs if required.

• EMR Ref 1203: Saturday, March 31 & Sunday, April 1, 2012 from 0800 to 1700 hrs. Rewrites on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 1700 hrs if required.

• EMR Ref 1207: Saturday, July 28 & Sunday, July 29, 2012; 0800 to 1700 hrs. Rewrites on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 1700 hrs if required.

• EMR Ref 1208: Tuesday, August 7 & Thursday, August 9, 2012, 0800 to 1700 hrs.

Please confirm the above course dates with ESA, as they are dependent on Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) exam dates and thus subject to change.

ESA Fees:
Fees for EMR Refresher are $350.00. Fees include a non-refundable application fee of $50.00, tuition, student fees and GST.

Total tuition fees must be paid at time of application.

Payment may be made by cheque (payable to Emergency Services Academy Ltd.), cash, debit card, Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

Students will be accepted for the course on a first come, first served basis. The maximum number of students accepted in an EMR Refresher Course will be 24.

Fees listed above apply to Canadian residents (Canadian Citizen, Landed Immigrant or Permanent Resident). International students will pay a 120% surcharge on tuition and comprehensive fees.
