Description:
ESA offers a refresher course for individuals needing to upgrade and refresh their EMT skills.

The following competencies are covered during the EMT Refresher Course:
• Primary Assessment
• Secondary Assessment and Vital Signs
• Secondary Survey and Vital Signs
• Shock
• Medication Administration
• Cardiovascular Emergencies
• Cardiovascular Cases
• ECG Monitoring
• Respiratory Cases
• Head Injuries
• Unconscious Patient
• Diabetic and Endocrine Emergencies
• Head Injury Cases
• Diabetic and Endocrine Patient
• Unconscious/Decreased LOC Patient Cases

The course is presented in the EMS classroom and scenario practice areas at ESA.

Prerequisites:
• Students must provide a photocopy of a Certificate of Successful Completion for an EMT course from a program approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics. The certificate must include a graduation date stating that the program was completed within the preceding three years.

• Registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) as an EMT within the preceding three years is also acceptable.

• If you are an EMT but do not have a certificate or registration within the preceding three years, you can take an EMT Refresher at ESA for personal reasons (such as to improve your skills or gain additional practice). You will not receive an EMT Refresher Certificate upon completion of the course at ESA unless you comply with o­ne of the above prerequisites.

• Proof of age (minimum 18 years) is required. A driver's license is acceptable.

Examinations:
The EMT Refresher student will be required to successfully complete a written examination. The grade required is 80% (eighty percent).

Credentials:
Successful students will receive a Certificate of Completion for the EMT Refresher Course from ESA.

The student must successfully complete the exam and must attend the full five days of the course in order to receive the Certificate of Completion.


Application:
An application for the EMT Refresher Course must include the following:

• Completed ESA Application Form

• Photocopy of EMT certificate from a previous course indicating:
The course was successfully completed within the last three years.
Name of school where course was taken.
The school must have an EMT course approved by ACP and preferably accredited by CMA.
OR
Photocopy of EMT registration with ACP dated within the past three years.
OR
A statement that you are taking the EMT Refresher Course for personal reasons and understand that you will not receive an EMR Refresher Certificate upon completion of the course at ESA.

• Proof of age (minimum 18 years), such as a photocopy of a driver's licence.

Total fees are $1,190.00. A non-refundable application fee of $50.00 must accompany the application. All fees must be paid by the Friday preceding the first day of classes.

ESA Fees:
Fees for the EMT Refresher Course are $1,190.00 including tuition, student fees and applicable GST.
