Description: ESA offers an Ice Rescue Course teaching practical rescue techniques for effective surface ice rescues. Responders are taught how to avoid becoming a victim of an ice environment.
The class is presented as an 8 hour, hands-on one day weekend course. The didactic portion of the course will be taught in the morning in an ESA classroom. Practical portion will follow in the afternoon at an open water site.
Topics include:
• Ice formations and hazards
• Ice strength evaluation
• Rescuer and victim response to acute hypothermia
• Cold water near drowning
• Ice rescue equipment and techniques
• Ice rescue operational plans
An excellent addition to a resume, ice rescue is on the application checklist for many major fire departments.
Accreditation: Theory, examination and certification for the ESA Ice Rescue Course are provided by Dive Rescue International.
Ice Rescue is not a NFPA certified course, but it meets the requirements of NFPA 1670, Chapter 7, Water, 7-3.7 Ice.
Prerequisites: An application for an ESA Ice Rescue Course must include the following:
• Completed ESA Application Form including an Email address. Free email is available on Google (gmail) and Hotmail. Correspondence between ESA and students will be sent by email.
• Proof of age (minimum 18 years). A driver's license is acceptable.
• Full payment of course fees.
Program Schedule: One day course with theory at ESA in the morning and practical on ice in the afternoon.
Credentials: Students need a minimum mark of 80% to successfully complete the ESA Ice Rescue Course. They are required to attend the full 8 hours of class.
The following certificate is awarded to students successfully completing this course:
Dive Rescue International Ice Rescue Certificate
Application: It is the responsibility of an applicant to ensure an application submitted to ESA is complete and meets all prerequisites.
Acceptance will be confirmed upon receipt of a complete application and full payment of fees.
If an applicant withdraws from an Ice Rescue Course before the first day of classes, the Application Fee is non-refundable.
There is no refund available for the Ice Rescue Course at ESA after the course has commenced.

ESA Fees: Fees for the Ice Rescue Course are $350.00. Fees include a non-refundable application fee of $50.00, tuition, student fees and applicable GST.
Total fees must be paid with the application.
Payment may be made by cheque (payable to Emergency Services Academy Ltd.), cash, debit card, Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
Fees listed above apply to Canadian residents (Canadian Citizen, Landed Immigrant or Permanent Resident). International students will pay a 120% surcharge on tuition and comprehensive fees.
Additional Expenses: All equipment required for an ESA Ice Rescue Course is provided by ESA.
