The EMT Program at Emergency Services Academy Ltd. ("ESA") is accredited with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP). ESA ensures that all Alberta College of Paramedics EMT core competencies are exceeded and that CMA Accreditation is maintained. The program strives to provide the opportunity to become a highly trained, well practiced EMT by using a variety of facilitative techniques in program delivery and low student-to-instructor ratios in lab sessions.
After successful completion of the classroom component, each student is scheduled to complete three field practicums; with an ambulance service, interhospital transfers and within a hospital setting.
The EMT Program offered at ESA is four months of full-time study. The actual duration of the program varies for each student, depending on scheduling and practicum availability.

Other: CMA Accreditation
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program at ESA holds six year accreditation with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), a standard held by very few training schools in Canada. This accreditation allows our graduates to be employed across Canada. This is a highly regarded standard for an EMT program, as shown in the following information from CMA.
Enrol in a CMA accredited program for high quality education!!
The CMA believes that relevant educational preparation is critical to ensuring competent health professionals who can contribute to effective and safe patient care as a member of the health care team.
CMA accreditation is an external validation of program quality. Graduating from a CMA accredited program means:
* your program has met national standards
* your program has patient care and student welfare at the forefront
* your education is relevant to current medical practice
* you have access to professional registration
* you have attained the competencies required for entry into practice
* your education is recognized by employers and the public
* you have greater mobility as a health science practictioner
The CMA's leadership brings together stakeholders to ensure national standards for the education of about 40,000 health care practitioners. This peer review process includes about 120 accredited programs involving over 900 academic and clinical facilities across Canada.
For more information on the CMA conjoint accreditation, please visit www.cma.ca/accredit.
Practicum Placements
Practicum placements occur after the didactic portion of each EMT program and are arranged for each student by the ESA Practicum Coordinator.
An EMT student may refuse one hospital and one ambulance placement. Upon refusal, the student's name will be added to the end of the current practicum placement waitlist. Once a second practicum placement is offered, the student can either attend the practicum placement at the scheduled date and location, or withdraw from the EMT Program at ESA.
The first practicum is the hospital practicum. This requires the EMT student to complete a minimum of 60 hours in a hospital setting. Time is spent in the Emergency Room assessing patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The EMT may also visit other hospital departments to gain valuable educational experience. Recent Alberta hospitals providing hospital practicums for ESA students include Fort Saskatchewan, Stony Plain, Wetaskiwin, Camrose and Bonnyville.
A second practicum is done with Interhospital Transfers in Edmonton. This consists of a minimum of 40 hours transferring patients.
The third practicum is the ambulance practicum. EMTs are required to complete a minimum of 192 hours and 30 calls at a Basic Life Support (BLS) or an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance provider. EMS providers may be single service (providing ambulance only) or integrated services (providing ambulance and fire). Recent services providing ambulance practicums include Strathcona County Emergency Services, Parkland Ambulance Authority, Camrose EMS, Muskwachees Ambulance (Hobbema) and Emergency Response Department, City of Edmonton (Edmonton Ambulance).
Following practicum completion and graduation, students are welcome to return to ESA and use the facilities and equipment to prepare for the Alberta College of Paramedics provincial exam.
Program Highlights
The EMT Program at ESA includes some study components which exceed accreditation requirements, including the following:
Interaction and Assessment of Specific Populations:
* Challenged Patients - Each EMT class spends some time with the clients at the Robinhood Association, Sherwood Park, Alberta. This allows students to become comfortable around patients with disabilities.
* Geriatric Patients - EMT classes spend a couple of hours at Cloverbar Lodge, Sherwood Park, Alberta with the resident seniors. The class breaks into small groups and takes vital signs, ask histories, and then conducts a question and answer period. The focus of this visit is to help students in dealing with senior citizens, as this is the largest population group requiring care from EMTs.
* Pediatric Patients - Students interact with children during pediatric classes. Pediatrics tend to be the most stressful calls, so this assists students in working with this age group and provides some practical exposure before practicums.
Tour of Station 1, Strathcona County Emergency Services, Sherwood Park AB
This tour familiarizes the EMT class with a very active ambulance service and the equipment on a very up-to-date ambulance.
Current EMS Trends
The Medical Director for ESA addresses EMT students with a focus on current medical trends and the role of EMS.
Online Tracking of Competency Skills
ESA is using online tracking of competencies during the EMT Program, rather than lab and practicum logbooks. Each student is provided with a Tungsten E2 Palm Pilot which allows them to view and track their progress in lab scenarios, hospital and ambulance practicums. This process is online through the CompTracker website. The Palm Pilot is included in EMT Program Fees (part of Program Materials) and becomes the responsibility and property of the EMT student.
Autopsies
EMT students have the opportunity to view an autopsy at the Office of the Medical Examiner, Edmonton, if scheduling at the office permits.
Graduates: Graduates from the ESA Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program are working for various ambulance services and industries in Canada. Current places of employment include:
• Edmonton Emergency Response Department AB
• Parkland County AB
• Strathcona County Emergency Services AB
• Spruce Grove Fire Department AB
• Calgary Fire Department AB
• Delta Fire Department BC
• Vancouver Fire Department BC
• HSE Integrated
• Interhospital Transfers
