Other: CMA Accreditation
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT/PCP) Program at ESA currently holds six year accreditation with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). This accreditation provides graduates with national recognition. This is a highly regarded standard for an EMT/PCP program, as reflected in the following information provided by CMA.
Enrol in a CMA accredited program for high quality education!!
The CMA believes that relevant educational preparation is critical to ensuring competent health professionals who can contribute to effective and safe patient care as a member of the health care team.
CMA accreditation is an external validation of program quality. Graduating from a CMA accredited program means:
* your program has met national standards
* your program has patient care and student welfare at the forefront
* your education is relevant to current medical practice
* you have access to professional registration
* you have attained the competencies required for entry into practice
* your education is recognized by employers and the public
* you have greater mobility as a health science practictioner
The CMA's leadership brings together stakeholders to ensure national standards for the education of about 40,000 health care practitioners. This peer review process includes about 120 accredited programs involving over 900 academic and clinical facilities across Canada.
For more information on the CMA conjoint accreditation, please visit www.cma.ca/accredit.
Practicum Placements
Practicum placements occur after the didactic portion of each Emergency Medical Technician (EMT/PCP) Program at ESA. These are arranged for each student by the EMT Practicum Coordinator.
The Hospital Practicum requires the EMT/PCP student to complete a minimum of 60 hours (5 to 7 shifts) in a hospital setting. Time is spent in the Emergency Room assessing patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. The EMT may also visit other hospital departments to gain valuable educational experience. Recent Alberta hospitals providing Hospital Practicums for ESA students include Fort Saskatchewan, Stony Plain, Wetaskiwin, Camrose and Bonnyville.
An Interhospital Practicum involves ambulance transfers in the Edmonton area and consists of a minimum of 40 hours transferring patients. The EMT/PCP student will gain valuable experience by conducting patient assessments, vitals, stretcher handling, patient history review and building a rapport with a patient in a non-emergency environment.
In the Emergency Ambulance Practicum, the EMT/PCP student must complete a minimum of 192 hours and 30 calls at a Basic Life Support (BLS) or an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance provider. EMS providers may be single service (ambulance only) or integrated services (ambulance and fire). Recent services providing ambulance practicums include Strathcona County Emergency Services, Parkland Ambulance Authority, Camrose EMS, Muskwachees Ambulance (Hobbema), Foothills Regional EMS, Prairie EMS, Associated Ambulance (formerly MediCare), and the Emergency Response Department, City of Edmonton (EMS).
Following practicum completion and graduation, EMT/PCP students are welcome to return to ESA and use the facilities and equipment to prepare for the Alberta College of Paramedics provincial registration exam.
EMT/PCP Program Highlights
The EMT/PCP Program at ESA includes some specialized study components:
Interaction and Assessment of Specific Populations:
* Challenged Patients - The EMT/PCP class interacts with the clients at the Robin Hood Association, Sherwood Park, Alberta. This allows students to become comfortable communicating with and assessing patients with disabilities.
* Geriatric Patients - The EMT/PCP class interacts with the senior residents at the Cloverbar Lodge, Sherwood Park, Alberta. Students work in small groups and take vital signs, histories, and participate in a question and answer period. The focus of this visit is for students to gain confidence in communicating with and assessing senior citizens, as this is the largest population group requiring care from an EMT/PCP.
* Pediatric Patients - The EMT/PCP class interacts with children during pediatric lectures and labs. Pediatrics calls tend to be stressful. This lecture/lab focus on communicating with and assessing pediatric patients provides some practical exposure before practicums.
Tour of Station 1, Strathcona County Emergency Services, Sherwood Park AB - This tour familiarizes the EMT/PCP class with a progressive combined service and the equipment on a modern, fully-equipped ambulance.
Current EMS Trends - The Medical Director for ESA addresses EMT/PCP students with a focus on current medical trends and the role of EMS in patient care.
STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service) - A two hour tour of STARS, Edmonton, provides a presentation about the emergency air ambulance service available in Alberta. Students learn when STARS is required as a responder and how to work with STARS staff on scene. They are given a tour of the facility and the helicopter. A short scenario on the simulator is included.
Online Tracking of Competency Skills - ESA is using online tracking of competencies during the EMT/PCP program to supplement the practicum manuals. Each student is provided with a hand-held device which allows them to view and track successful completion of the NOCP competencies in all performance environments including academic, simulated settings, clinical and Preceptorship/Ambulance practicums. This process is completed online through the CompTracker website. The hand-held device is included in EMT Program Fees, Program Materials and becomes the responsibility and property of the EMT/PCP student.
Autopsies - EMT/PCP students may have the opportunity to view an autopsy at the Office of the Medical Examiner, Edmonton, based on availability provided by the provincial Medical Examiner.
Room & Board: ESA has a list of accommodations available in the Sherwood Park area. This list is not monitored by ESA. Students are responsible for contacting sources and making their own financial arrangements for room and board.
Graduates: Each year ESA submits an EMT/PCP Program Graduate Report to Private Institutions, Alberta Learning as part of our licensing as a private vocational college. The following statistics are based on the report covering April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009:
ESA EMT Graduation Rate: 93.3% of the students accepted into the EMT Program at ESA successfully completed the program.
ESA Job Placement Rate: 95.7% of the graduates from the EMT Program at ESA were successful in obtaining training related employment.
Graduates from the ESA Emergency Medical Technician (EMT/PCP) Program are working for EMS and Fire services across Canada. Places of employment include:
• Edmonton Emergency Response Department AB
• Parkland County AB
• Strathcona County Emergency Services AB
• Spruce Grove Fire Department AB
• Calgary Fire Department AB
• Delta Fire Department BC
• Vancouver Fire Department BC
• HSE Integrated
• Interhospital Transfers
Application: It is the responsibility of an applicant to ensure an application submitted to ESA is complete and meets all prerequisites.
If an incomplete application to an EMT/PCP Program is received by ESA, the application fee will be processed and applicant information will be entered in the ESA database, but an applicant will not be scheduled for an interview to the competition for an EMT/PCP Program until a complete application has been received and processed by ESA.
