Description: The second level of care in paramedicine in Canada is Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), known as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Alberta.
EMT/PCP is the largest group of paramedics in Canada and provides medical services in a variety of settings from urban to industrial. Many EMTs/PCPs are employed by industry, ambulance or EMS services, fire services and the military.
The EMT/PCP Program at Emergency Services Academy Ltd. (“ESA”) is accredited with the Canadian Medical Association and approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics. This allows successful students to apply nationwide for EMS employment. ESA ensures that all Alberta College of Paramedics EMT core competencies are met or exceeded and that CMA Accreditation is maintained. The program strives to provide the opportunity for the student to become a highly trained, well-practiced EMT/PCP by using a variety of facilitative techniques in program delivery and low student to instructor ratios in lab sessions.
After successful completion of the classroom component at ESA, each student is scheduled to complete field practicums; Clinical/Hospital, Transfer (dependent on availability) and Emergency Ambulance.
The EMT/PCP Program takes between six and twelve months to complete, depending on scheduling and practicum availability. It is the equivalent of four months of full-time work based on required hours.
The ESA Advantage: • Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Six Year Accreditation provides students with national recognition.
• Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) Six Year Program Approval

A Transfer Practicum (subject to availability) requires the EMT/PCP student to complete a minimum of forty hours in a Transfer Ambulance setting under the direct supervision of an EMT/PCP or Paramedic. The student will assess atients during transfers to various medical facilities.
In the Emergency Ambulance Practicum the EMT/PCP student must complete a minimum of 192 hours and a minimum of 30 calls in the Emergency Ambulance setting under the direct supervision of an EMT/PCP or Paramedic. Recent services providing ambulance practicums include Strathcona County Emergency Services, Parkland Ambulance Authority, Spruce Grove Fire Department, Camrose EMS, Muskwachees Ambulance (Hobbema), Foothills Regional EMS, Prairie EMS, Associated Ambulance (formerly Medicare), and the Emergency Response Department, City of Edmonton (EMS).
EMT/PCP Program Highlights
The EMT/PCP Program at ESA includes some specialized study components:
Interaction and Assessment of Specific Populations:
* Challenged Patients - The EMT/PCP class interacts with the clients at the Robin Hood Association, Sherwood Park, Alberta. This allows students to become comfortable communicating with and assessing patients with disabilities.
* Geriatric Patients - The EMT/PCP class interacts with the senior residents at the Cloverbar Lodge, Sherwood Park, Alberta. Students work in small groups and take vital signs, histories, and participate in a question and answer period. The focus of this visit is for students to gain confidence in communicating with and assessing senior citizens, as this is the largest population group requiring care from an EMT/PCP.
* Pediatric Patients - The EMT/PCP class interacts with children during pediatric lectures and labs. Pediatrics calls tend to be stressful. This lecture/lab focus on communicating with and assessing pediatric patients provides some practical exposure before practicums.
Tour of Station 1, Strathcona County Emergency Services, Sherwood Park AB - This tour familiarizes the EMT/PCP class with a progressive combined service and the equipment on a modern, fully-equipped ambulance.
Current EMS Trends - The Medical Director for ESA addresses EMT/PCP students with a focus on current medical trends and the role of EMS in patient care.
STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service) - A tour of STARS, Edmonton, provides a presentation about the emergency air ambulance service available in Alberta. Students learn when STARS is required as a responder and how to work with STARS staff on scene. They are given a tour of the facility and the helicopter.
Online Tracking of Competency Skills - ESA is using online tracking of competencies during the EMT/PCP program to supplement the practicum manuals. Each student is provided with an iPad which allows them to view and track successful completion of the NOCP competencies in all performance environments including academic, simulated settings, clinical and Preceptorship/Ambulance practicums. This process is completed online through the CompTracker website. The cost of the iPad is included in EMT Program Fees and becomes the responsibility and property of the EMT/PCP student.
Autopsies - EMT/PCP students may have the opportunity to view an autopsy at the Office of the Medical Examiner, Edmonton, based on availability provided by the provincial Medical Examiner.
Health & Wellness Yoga
ESA provides two one hour yoga sessions (as available) as part of a Health & Wellness initiative. Yoga for Emergency Response Personnel will focus on relaxation and stress management techniques for emergency services personnel. Sessions are presented by a certified yoga instructor.
Room & Board: ESA has a list of accommodations available in the Sherwood Park area. This list is not monitored by ESA. Students are responsible for contacting sources and making their own financial arrangements for room and board.
Graduates: Each year ESA submits an EMT/PCP Program Graduate Report to Private Institutions, Alberta Learning as part of our licensing as a private vocational college. The following statistics are based on the report covering April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011:
ESA EMT Graduation Rate: 95% of the students accepted into the EMT Program at ESA successfully completed the program.
ESA Job Placement Rate: 73% of the graduates from the EMT Program at ESA were successful in obtaining training related employment.
Graduates from the ESA Emergency Medical Technician (EMT/PCP) Program are working for EMS and Fire services across Canada. Places of employment include:

Application: It is the responsibility of an applicant to ensure an application submitted to ESA is complete and meets all prerequisites.
An applicant will not be scheduled for an interview to the competition for an EMT/PCP Program until a complete application has been received and processed by ESA.
If a student is accepted to an EMT/PCP Program at ESA and withdraws before the first day of classes, the Application Fee, Program Materials Fee and Student Fees are non-refundable.
The refunds available for a student withdrawing from the EMT/PCP Program at ESA after the program has commenced are based on The Private Vocational Training Act of Alberta. The refunds depend on the percentage of training provided as of the withdrawal date. For details, please contact ESA.
