Description:
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) is the entry level into paramedicine in Canada. This group often includes the individuals working in rural and remote locations and those involved with volunteer service organizations. In some communities, EMRs provide the highest level of pre-hospital care.

The Emergency Medical Responder Program offered by Emergency Services Academy Ltd. ("ESA”) facilitates those interested in obtaining entry-level training and certification in the Alberta Emergency Medical Services Profession. Successful candidates will be eligible to write the Alberta College of Paramedics EMR exam enabling provincial registration.

EMR is often a pre-requisite for employment in a fire service in Canada.

The program consists of 98 hours of instruction:

• 42 hours Theory
• 56 hours Practical

The program is preceded by an Orientation Session which provides an outline and review of the program materials. The first day of classes includes an exam based o­n home study, which comprises 10% of the final grade.

Additional study time of 100+ hours is recommended as the program is very intensive.

Accreditation:
The ESA Emergency Medical Responder Program has six year accreditation with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP). ESA was the first school in Alberta to receive this designation.

The EMR program is also approved by Alberta Occupational Health and Safety as an Advanced First Aid level course.

Prerequisites:
• Email address. Free email is available on Google (gmail) and Hotmail. Correspondence between ESA and students will be sent by email.
• Proof of age (minimum 18 years)
• Transcripts of Grade 12 High School Diploma, General Educational Development (GED)/equivalent, or post secondary education
• CPR Level C (Heart & Stroke Health Care Provider Level C, St. John's Ambulance Level B, or equivalent)
• Standard First Aid Certificate

Examinations:
Students need a minimum of 80% in both the didactic and practical components to successfully complete this program. Successful students may then proceed to register as an EMR with the Alberta College of Paramedics within o­ne year.

• Heart & Stroke Health Care Provider Level C Update

Employment Standards:
ESA is committed to providing a quality program that will produce a confident and competent EMR. Our graduates are employed by industry, ambulance services and fire departments. They also are active volunteers in their communities.

Graduates:
Recent graduates from the ESA Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Program are working for various ambulance services and industries in Canada. Many of our EMR graduates have also taken the ESA Professional Fire Fighter Program, and with the two certifications are successful in their applications to work for large emergency services.

Application:
It is the responsibility of an applicant to ensure an application submitted to ESA is complete and meets all prerequisites.

If an incomplete application to an EMR Program is received by ESA, the application fee will be processed, but the application will be returned to the applicant for completion. An applicant is not accepted into an EMR Program until a complete application has been processed by ESA.

Applications to the EMR Program must include full payment of fees ($1,125.00 for Canadian students; $1,350.00 for International students).

If an applicant withdraws from an EMR Program before the first day of classes, the application fee of $50.00 is non-refundable. If textbooks and course materials are returned unused, a refund of fees less the application fee is available ($1,075.00). If the textbooks and course materials have been used in any manner, the refund will be for tuition fees ($800.00).

There is no refund available for the EMR Program at ESA after the program has commenced.

EMR Program Fees

The EMR Program fees as of February 1, 2010 (affecting EMR 1004 and future EMR Programs) are:

The total EMR Program fees of $1,125.00 must be included with an application.

Program Materials include the program textbook, ESA EMR binder and program materials.

EMR Student Fees provide accidental health and dental insurance coverage for students while attending ESA classes, off-site training and during practical assignments.

International Students are welcome to take the EMR Program at ESA if they meet the prerequisites and if the training will meet their needs. Please submit an inquiry by email to determine the suitability of the EMR Program at ESA before submitting an application.

Additional Expenses:
Optional Expenses - Equipment is provided by ESA for students' use during the EMR Program. Purchase of equipment (stethoscope, pocket mask, mini maglite, universal scissors and instrument holster) is optional.

Further Information:
Post Graduate Costs - EMR graduates must pass the Alberta College of Paramedics provincial exam and be registered with ACP before they are licensed to work as EMRs in Alberta. The ACP exam must be written within one year of graduating from the EMR Program.
